Saying Goodbye Again

I'm here at the skatepark watching my husband on the mini ramp. In two days he will be leaving again for New York. It's really hard to just enjoy the time we have together knowing it will be over soon and we will have to go back to long distance again. I don't know how much longer it will be until we can be together for good. I'm so grateful that I have someone who wanted to be with me sobmuch that the distance didn't matter. I'm grateful that we can afford plane tickets to visit each other. I'm grateful that even though my car doesn't work and my husband isn't allowed to stay in my barracks room with me that I have friends who let me use their cars and stay in their home so we don't have to pay for a hotel.
I just have to keep reminding myself that this will be over soon, even if it's not as soon as i want. I have a plan for the future that keeps me going. I decided to go to culinary school with my GI Bill when I get out of the army. It's one of the best and it's close to home in New York.
It's hard when you always thought getting married would mean having a place together and sharing a life together, only to be told you have to wait. It's been more than two years apart!
We've made it this far... The time when we can be together is closer than ever.

Walnut Marshmallow Fudge

It's been a difficult month. It isn't going to get easier either. I'm hoping something will happen soon so my husband and I can live under the same roof for the first time. Even the same time zone would be nice!
Aside from that mess, I had an okay Thanksgiving. I also got to dog sit for my friends doggy, Charlie. He's the sweetest doggy ever!! I'm so excited to get a pet of my own too. It makes waking up and coming home a lot more fun.

One can of sweetened condensed milk, one bag of chocolate chips (dark chocolate), half a bag of walnuts and a handful of marshmallows. Melt the milk and chocolate together in a sauce pan. Add the marshmallows and walnuts right before pouring the mixture into a cake pan lined with parchment paper, Chill and EAT!

Mister Charlie!

Thanksgiving pie.

I made some rolls with spam, avacado and cucumber.

A girls night out at the wine bar.

Espresso to sober up after all that wine!

Newest Tattoo!

Last night I got a brand new tattoo. When I was thinking of getting one a few months ago my husband suggested I get a bear, since our nicknames for each other is "bear." I thought it was a great idea! Much better than getting his name tattooed on me... When I came home and showed it to him over Skype he had the cutest smile on his face! I could tell he felt special to be tattooed on my arm.

Two weeks ago Joe finally decided to move to Alaska with me! I'm so excited about it. We've been looking for apartments and doing paperwork and he's been packing up. The plan is for me to fly home in the beginning of January, both of us drive across country from New York to Seattle. From there we will take the ferry to Alaska, and finally drive through part of Canada to Anchorage.
This is going to be such a big change. We've maintained a long distance relationship for two years now and it's been pretty rough. I'm so glad it will be over. I not only excited about us being together, but I'm excited that I can finally live like an adult! The Army loves to make single soldiers feel like babies. They even give us plastic covers to put on our mattresses! As if I'm a 27 year old bed wetter. I won't have to allow my boss at work to come into my bedroom and tell me that it's not clean enough, or that I can't have a dirty dish in my sink. They won't send drug dogs in my bedroom. I won't have a strange man from the housing office opening up my door when I'm in the shower. I won't be told that I "have" to eat food from the dining facility, as if I don't know how to cook.
Perhaps I will hate my job less, now that I will have my husband here with me. Someone who doesn't talk about work on the weekends. Someone who doesn't care about promotion points or airborne school or who is the newest sergeant in the shop, etc... Someone who will watch movies with me, drink micro brews and talk about skateboarding and indie music. We can live on our own little planet.

Sushi with a Friend

My good friend came back from Afghanistan a few weeks ago. We went out car shopping and got some sushi afterwards. I missed her so much! We had some great girls nights. We both met on the way to basic training in Albany. We went through the flights to Fort Leonard Wood, the shark attack, graduation and then we met up at the same duty station! It can be hard to find good female friends in the army, I'm lucky that I found some great ones.

Autumn Plaid Skirt

This Saturday I used my Burda Young 7229 pattern to make this Fall/Winter skirt. I really love it! I feel like this is the most "finished" piece of clothing I've sewn yet. I tend to get lazy and I take short cuts, which I regret later. I think I will use this pattern again once I find some good fabric.

I wish I had the motivation to take some nicer photos outside, but it's chilly here in Alaska (it snowed yesterday) and I don't feel like driving out to place where there are no other people just to take pictures.

I found a few great vintage pieces on my trip home that I will have to take photos in. I am also anxiously waiting for my wedding photos to arrive in the mail! I know I'll be doing another blog re-vamp once I get my wedding photos. I cant seem to get a design I love, because I can't come up with something personal enough that is also pretty. Wedding photos will do the trick! Everything was so beautiful and pink!

Leaving Home

I just made it back to Alaska and I'm not very happy to be here. I had a really great time in New York, the best wedding in the world, a dream honeymoon, vintage clothes shopping and lots of time with my husband. I'm so sad it's over.
I'll have to wait until Christmas to see him again.

Lighthouse

I had a lovely afternoon with my husband at the lighthouse. We took a small hike out to take some photos as it started to drizzle. I had never been there before - I love how quaint the east coast is.

Talkeetna Weekend

In less than 4 days I'll be on my way home for my wedding! I'm spending my last weekend before the big day in Talkeetna. Down town is so adorable! It has a lot of touristy gift shops, but I found a really great wind chime in the shape of a dead fish. I'm excited to hang it outside when my husband and I finally get a place together!

A Day at the Fair

My friends and I went to the fair today! It was really chilly and drizzled the whole time, but it was still a nice way to spend my long weekend. I've been obsessed lately with vintage hairstyle videos on YouTube, so I decided to do a pin curl set the night before and do a little Rosie the Riveter look. I was so excited when I found the leopard print bandana at Michaels Craft store.
Since I don't do rides at carnivals, I pretty much just look forward to the food... In this case, a doughnut burger! it was delicious! I also got some nachos and crab bisque.

Weekend with Papa in Pick Photos

I discovered a new app that I can't get enough of! It's called "Pick" and is a cross between Instagram and the super adorable Purikura booths that you find in Japan. I still have a ton of little photo stickers that my friend and I took while I was in Japan almost 10 years ago. I've been looking for an app that would give me the same effect for my iPhone pictures. I found it!! I've been constantly Purikura-boothing all of the photos I took while my dad visited this weekend. We explored Anchorage, drove down to Seward and had a pub crawl last night. I had a great time!

Owl Painting #3

I finally finished up my third owl painting! I had two hanging in my kitchen, with an open spot left for the third. I almost thought I wouldn't make a third one. I tend to start a lot of projects and not finish them. But here it is! I really like it.

New Baby

My friends Nastassia and Rob had their second child the other day! My friend Kyla and I went to visit them in the hospital.
He is such a handsome little boy! Their daughter is already one of the most adorable babies EVER and their son is just as cute!
I absolutely love to hold babies... It scares the heck out of me though! They are so small and light with floppy little bobble heads - I'm afraid of breaking them!

Girls Night

Well, I am flat broke again! I spent my last three dollars on a 40 to have a girls night. It was worth it, but my gas light came on this morning so I may have to walk to work tomorrow!
I did some window shopping downtown the other day and tried out some Brody-dalle-esque makeup. I should have taken an outfit photo, I had a cute "The Cramps" tshirt, skirt and converse. But alas, taking outfit photos is embarrassing.

The rest of my weekend was okay. Joe and I got our cruise tickets in the mail! We are going to Bermuda for iur honeymoon and I'm SO excited!

My Womanifesto

I've been having trouble coming up with a great womanifesto. I don't want to define myself by my political beliefs. I don't want to create a poetic metaphor for myself either. But here is my go at it:

I believe in women, because I believe in myself. Women have the capacity to decide how we live our lives and how to make ourselves happy. From a prostitute to a woman in a burka, I believe every choice we make is made with intelligence, thoughtfulness and self respect in mind.

A great woman once said, "I don't give a damn about my reputation." Reputations are based on stereotypes and expectations that are either a double edged sword or impossible to attain anyway.

I will not allow myself to be indoctrinated. Not to religion, not to rape culture, not to the Army, not to homophobia, not to gender, not to ethnocentrism. I want to see clearly.

A great transvestite once said, "Don't dream it, be it."
You're goddamn right. I can make it happen. I won't sit around thinking about what I wish I could be.

I accept that I don't have a plan. I don't want a plan. There is no "grand" plan, so why not just go with the flow? I will make smart choices for the future, but too much planning makes life boring. I love my spontaneity.

That's it for now! Here's an extra picture of me and my hubby <3

Just a Photo

I'm trying out the blogger app on my iPhone. I won't be writing much, but I'll leave this picture of my handsome husband...
